O’Melveny Helps California Secure Additional COVID-19 Hospital Bed Capacity

March 20, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK—March 20, 2020—O’Melveny represented the State of California in two complex transactions to quickly expand the State’s capacity to treat COVID-19 patients.

California entered into these agreements with Verity Health Systems of California, a non-profit hospital operator currently in bankruptcy proceedings before the US Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. The Court approved these agreements on March 20 in an order issued only eight days after O’Melveny was retained in this matter.

The deal crafted and negotiated by O’Melveny allows the State to make full use of St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles and Seton Medical Center in Daly City, adding more than 500 desperately needed hospital beds to the State’s capacity.

“To use a phrase I learned from Governor Newsom, O’Melveny ‘met the moment.’ We are proud to do our part to help the state face the COVID-19 crisis. We hope other states can implement similar strategies to increase their hospital bed capacity,” said partner Nancy Mitchell, who led the O’Melveny team.

The O’Melveny team reflected expertise in bankruptcy as well as healthcare issues. Along with Mitchell, the team included partners Steve Warren, David Deaton, and Kevin Feder, as well as special counsel Jim Kidder, counsel Jacob Beiswenger, and associate Michael Pierce. Associates Brandon Amash, Hope Blain, and Biola Macaulay also played key roles in the transactions.
