Petrocelli and Oppenheimer Honored with Daily Journal 2019 “California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year” Awards

LOS ANGELES—March 28, 2019—The Daily Journal recognized O’Melveny partners Daniel Petrocelli and M. Randall Oppenheimer with 2019 “California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year” awards. The annual awards honor lawyers who have handled the year’s most significant cases across a variety of practice areas.
Petrocelli, chair of the firm’s Trial Practice Committee, and Oppenheimer, co-chair of the litigation department, were honored for their successful defense of AT&T and Time Warner in what has been called “the antitrust trial of the century,” defeating an attempt by US Department of Justice to block the media giants’ landmark, US$85.4 billion merger. After a six-week trial, US District Judge Richard Leon rejected the government’s request for an injunction and permitted the landmark merger to close. The decision was affirmed on appeal.
As the Daily Journal noted, Oppenheimer and Petrocelli led a cross-disciplinary team of lawyers, with antitrust partner Katrina Robson playing a critical role. “It was truly a collective enterprise of lawyers,” Petrocelli told the Daily Journal of the massive effort.
Oppenheimer told the Daily Journal what made the case especially interesting was its backdrop. “The industry was literally changing as this case went forward,” he said. “We were translating the daily headlines of the media world directly into the trial in real time.”
