Framroze “Fram” Virjee, President of California State Fullerton, and O’Melveny partner Apalla Chopra have a virtual Fireside Chat: “Reimagining Education In the Shadows of COVID-19.” Fram will detail his university’s journey from “normal, to abnormal, to the new normal, the bumps along the way, and what he expects will be long-term changes,” including a few unexpected silver linings. As the fall semester looms, Apalla, who leads O’Melveny’s Colleges & Universities and Labor & Employment practices, will discuss pandemic-related lawsuits and other unprecedented challenges universities are grappling with from socially distanced-housing to lecture hall reconfiguration. Fram and Apalla will also comment on the public/private and digital divides while exploring whether “equal access to education” is an attainable goal during a dual crisis: public health emergency framed by painful and widespread racial and social unrest. O’Melveny and Asian Americans Advancing Justice hosted a special panel conversation about the surge of racist incidents targeting Asian Americans during the coronavirus pandemic and the opportunity for hope as we emerge. Our panelists discussed the impact of COVID-19-related intolerance, the history of anti-Asian racism in the United States, the disproportionate impact this virus has had on people of color, and what we can do to combat it.
